Use iPhone XS/XS Max to Adjust Depth of Field on iOS 12.1

Apple put lots of emphasis on the new features of iPhone Xs/Xs Max and iPhone XR especially new camera features at the Apple's launch event in September 12, 2018. It means that if you have installed iOS 12.1 beta, iPhone Xs/Xs Max and iPhone XR can allow you to adjust depth of field while clicking a picture and even after taking photos.

It's an optical phenomenon particularly related to film and photography, which is the distance about the plane of focus (POF) where objects appear acceptably sharp in a picture. Step 1. Launch the Camera app on your new iPhone and then select Portrait Mode. Or you can use 3D Touch to bring up Portrait Mode option on your iPhone Xs/Xs Max.

Step 2. Tap on the “f 5.0” button on the top right corner of your iPhone. Then a measuring line will appear at the bottom of the picture you want to capture. It is a depth measurement line, where wider aperture means more blur and small aperture means less blur.

Tips : You are able to slide right to add more blur (smaller f-stop value) or slide left to get less blur (larger f-stop value).

Step 3. After adjusting the blur effect, tap the shutter button to capture an image in Portrait Mode. Besides, if you are not satisfied with the current blur effect, you do not need to capture another one. Now move to step 4 to see how to solve it.

Step 4. Choose the photo taken before and tap on “Edit” button. Then you will see the depth control interface that enables you to edit your picture. Once you have selected a perfect blur effect, tap on “Done” button.
