iOS 12 brings many new features, like Siri Shortcuts,Augmented Reality Measure, and MeMoji. In this article, I will show you how to use Augmented Reality Measure app in iOS 12.

What does the Measure app do? It allows you to measure objects and rooms in the real world using the camera by visualizing them in augmented reality.

iOS 12 Measure App Compatibility

No all iPhones or iPads out there can use the Measure App. Measure app requires ARKit to work. iOS devices that have an A9, A10, A11 or newer chips support ARKit.

According to Apple’s gudelines, the iOS devices below are able to measure objects in augmented reality.

iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPad Pro, and iPad (2017).

If you download the Measure app on your iPhone 6, you will only see a ruler prepared on the left side.

Getting Started with Measure App

When you open the Measure app, it actually display on-screen instructions to guide you through every step of the way. You can refer to the steps below to get started.

Step 1. Within the Measure app, move your iPhone to make sure the white dot inside the while circle.

Step 2. Move it to whatever object that you want to measure and tap the + sign.

Step 3. Move your iPhone torward the direction that you like to end measuring and then you will get the measurement value.

Step 4. Tap the +sign again to finish measuring.

You can repeat this method to get the full dimensions of the object or measure another one. After you complete measuring the object, you can take a photo of the results by tapping the shutter button.

You can also tap on each measurement to display the corresponding value of the measurement in a popup. Then you can copy and paste the results to another app like Notes or Email.

If you feel this results inaccurate, then you can tap the Clear button in the top right corner to delete the result and measure it again if you like.

iOS 12 measure app accuracy

I have used Measure app for quite some time and I find it not quite accurate. The accuracy of the Measure app depends on the precision of where the end point. If end point is not placed precisely, sometimes the result is heavily wrong.

After all, it is the beta version of Measure app that I tested. I believe that official version of Measure app will make it more accurate. As for now, Measure app is not recommended to use for precise measurement.

Despite that, Measure app is great and fun to get the measurement value from an object. You can get a rough idea about of size of any object just using your iPhone.
