How to Set Up and Use Touch ID on iPhone and iPad

What is Touch ID

Apple-TouchID.pngDesigned and released by Apple, Touch ID is a fingerprint recognition feature built into the Home Button and used to unlock iPhone and iPad, make purchase in the various Apple media stores and authenticate in applications.

So far, Apple’s Touch ID technology is available on iPhone 5s or later, iPad (5th generation), iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, and iPad mini 3 or later.

How to Set Up Touch ID on iPhone and iPad

It’s very simple to set up Touch ID on your iPhone and iPad. In the following, we take iPhone as example to show you how to set up Touch ID. All the steps could apply to Touch ID settings on iPad as well.

Since passcode is required to use Touch ID feature, you need to create a passcode for your iPhone before you set up Touch ID.

To set up Touch ID on iPhone,

·         Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode (you will be asked to enter your passcode to access Touch ID settings)

·         Tap “Add a Fingerprint…” and then place your finger on the Home Button to start setting Touch ID

·         Lift and rest your finger on the Home Button repeatedly (you’ll feel a quick vibration but don’t press the Home Button)

·         Adjust grip and keep going to capture the edges of your print, and tap “Continue

·         Place your finger on the Home Button again until you see the “Complete” hint, tap “Continue” to finish setting up Touch ID on iPhone

You are allowed to use different fingers to set up multiple Touch IDs. Actually, we would suggest you to do so. This enables you to access Touch ID feature using different fingers.

How to Use Touch ID on iPhone and iPad

Before using Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad, you need to do some settings.

Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passocde, and turn on Touch ID feature for iPhone Unlock, Apple Pay and iTunes & App Store.

In this section, you can also rename or delete your Touch ID fingerprints.

By default, the Touch ID fingerprints will be named as Finger 1, Finger 2 and etc. You can rename them to make it easier to know which fingerprints are already registered. How to rename Touch ID fingerprints on iPhone?

Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > tap the fingerprints you want to rename > type in a new name (eg: Right forefinger or Right thumb) > Done

To delete the Touch ID fingerprint, just tap “Delete Fingerprint”.

To use Touch ID on iPhone and iPad:

Once you set up Touch ID, you can press the Home Button using fingers you registered with Touch ID to unlock your iPhone and make purchase in App Store, iTunes Store and iBook Store. Moreover, Touch ID can be also used for Apple Pay with an iPhone 6 or later.

Currently, you can use Touch ID to many Apps on your iPhone and iPad. There is no need to scan or add your fingerprints into the apps again. Simply authorize your registered Touch ID fingerprints, then you will be able to access apps or login to your accounts without using 4 or 6 digit unlock code anymore.
