Apple introduces Face ID as part of the new features in the new iPhone X, like with several other innovations a lot of people are skeptical about it. In this article, we would be taking you through the new face ID feature, what it is about and how to use it on your iPhone X.
What is Face ID?
Face ID is a form of authentication that makes use of biometrics rather than a password, or an authentication app. The use of biometrics is a lot similar to the fingerprint recognition being employed currently. The difference is that rather than using one or more fingerprints like with Touch ID, Face ID makes use of the unique characteristics of your face.
You can use Face ID in the same manner in which you use Touch ID, applications like Apple Pay, App Store and also to make iTunes purchases. The main advantage of Face ID is that it can be used without the need for the backup passcode feature.
Currently, only the iPhone X is going to have the Face ID feature. Face ID does not intend to replace Touch ID as it is only available on iPhone X. All other iPhone models, such as iPhone 8, iPhone 6, would still be with the Touch ID.
How to set up Face ID?
Setting up Face ID is just in the similar way you do with Touch ID. The steps are below.
l Go to Settings
l Tap on Face ID & Passcode
l Select Enroll Face, and tap on Get Started
l Then your iPhone X would use the front-facing camera to display your face within a circle with green tick marks surrounding it. You would be required to move your head in a circle, while your facial characteristics are captured.
How to unlock iPhone X with Face ID?
The beauty of the iPhone X is that it is not scanning continuously. Instead, it would require that you wake it up using one of several options available to you. These include pick up the phone or rise to wake or hitting the side button.
The next step involves you looking at the phone. The iPhone X has the ability to penetrate through your sun glasses as it has infrared sensors, although it requires that your eyes be open. This is to ensure your phone cannot be unlocked while you are asleep.
Also to make sure you don’t unintentionally unlock your phone, the iPhone X is attention aware. What this means is that if you are not looking attentively, the iPhone X would not unlock. This feature can be turned on and off using the user accessibility option.
The iPhone X Face ID can also be used in a wide variety of light conditions, even in dark rooms as well. The Face ID would also come with updated face features. What this means that the face ID app would continually update its profile if it receives new information which was better than its current version.
